Will your image print clearly?
More pixels in a smaller space usually means a sharper little print.
Pixels per inch describes the image detail
Effective PPI is the number of image pixels spread across an inch of the final print. If a picture is 1,200 pixels wide and you print it 4 inches wide, its effective resolution is 300 PPI. Print that same picture 8 inches wide, and it becomes 150 PPI.
This is different from a printer’s advertised DPI, which describes its ink or toner dots. PaperFit reports the effective PPI of your image at the size you selected. It is a useful signal, not a promise of photographic quality.
A practical way to read the indicator

These thresholds are PaperFit’s practical guidance. Paper, viewing distance, printer settings, image sharpness and compression all affect the final result. A blurry original does not become sharp just because it has many pixels.
Changing a DPI tag does not add detail
Setting a file’s metadata to “300 DPI” does not create new photographic information. What matters here is the original pixel count divided by the physical print size. PaperFit places the image at your chosen dimensions and calculates that relationship directly.
Use an original, not a screenshot
Download the original photo or export a high-quality image from your design tool. A screenshot of an image is often smaller and may include compression, browser scaling or a coloured background. A saved image from a messaging app may also have been reduced.
Keep proportions and transparency in mind
PaperFit preserves your image’s shape. If you need a square, crop the original to a square first. PNG transparency is kept in the PDF; on ordinary paper, transparent areas show the paper beneath. Most home printers do not print white ink.
Resolution does not guarantee colour matching
PaperFit is a simple layout tool, not a colour-proofing application. It normalizes images through your browser before export and does not offer a professional CMYK or ICC-managed workflow. Screen brightness, paper finish and printer settings can change the look of colours. For a colour-critical job, test with your intended printer and stock.
The best preview is one small print. Check both sharpness and physical size before using a whole sheet of photo paper.
